Elverys achieves new heights

Established in 1847, Elverys Sports is the oldest sports store in Ireland. Following a take over by Staunton Sports in 1998, the company has expanded from a single store operation to thirty-five stores nationwide, and is proud to be wholly Irish owned.

Rapid expansion programme

Employing over four hundred people, Elverys caters for both the casual sporting community and top sports athletes. Its business has been built on a high level of customer service, quality sports goods, reliability and above all, instilling confidence in the public that Elverys Sports is the retail store for those interested in sport. As a result of the company's rapid expansion programme, Elverys decided to relocate from Galway, to a new propose built distribution centre in Mayo, Ireland.

Turnkey storage solution

Dublin-based Storage Systems Limited was selected to be the partner in this move. It was awarded the contract to provide a turnkey storage solution for Elverys’ new 6,000 sq. metre facility.

Effective storage

Niall Rock of Storage Systems explains: "Having such a huge diversity of products, ranging from squash balls and treadmills to clothing, Elverys proved a challenge for our design team. Our main focus was to provide a solution that focused on utilising space, reducing manually handling, increasing speed of picking and providing effective storage for each product."

Redirack pallet racking

The solution was to provide fifty-six bays of Redirack Adjustable Pallet Racking, for the palletised bulkier goods that are serviced by forklift trucks. Each bay is 10,200mm high by 900mm deep by 2,700mm clear width, fitted with 7 beam levels. The first and second beam level in each bay is decked out with 25mm chipboard.

Three tiered storage mezzanine

This is in conjunction with a three-tiered Redifloor storage mezzanine, measuring 38,700mm long by 17,050mm wide. On the first floor Storage Systems installed 320 bays of HI-280 Adjustable Steel Shelving, each with 7 shelves, for small parts such as clothing and accessories. All bays are fitted with steel back and side panels and steel base plinths. On the second floor of the storage mezzanine are 78 bays of Long- Span shelving for footware, and the remaining third floor is used for storing larger items such as footballs, hurls and hockey sticks.

Deliveries to all Elverys stores

Niall continued, "From the intake marshalling area we have an automated conveyor system which delivers the products to their storage locations. Picking is achieved via handheld scanners, goods are placed in totes, and the automated conveyor delivers the totes to the despatch area, where deliveries are made to all of Elverys’ stores."
